Belly dance in Egypt serves tWo purposes folk or social dance.
As a social dance, Raqs Shaabi or Raqs Baladi “belly dance” is performed at celebrations and social gatherings by a variety of ordinary people (male and female), in their ordinary clothes. One night on our recent trip to Egypt many in our group participated in this social dance.
In Egypt dancers wear the bedlah. I purchased a wrap with glittering ornaments that jingle while I was in Egypt. It certainly added to the joy of our Galabia Night.
In Idaho when attending a Pow-Wow, my favorite dances are the jingle dress dancers. The jingles create their own music and rhythm and make the dance magical. The jingles on a bedlah give me the same joy. The coin like jingles dangling and rattling as the hips move and the belly tells a story are magical.
Traditional dancing presents a folk tale that is performed with Arabic music.
The above was the dancer at our resort in Sharm El Sheikh. The Park Regency has nightly entertainment and she was the evening attraction. Park Regency
Last year in 2022 we went on a dinner cruise on the Nile. Andrea I loved the short little cruise. The food was not my favorite, but the time on board was delightful. You can book the dinner cruise through your tour company, but it is also something you can do on your own. Dinner aboard the Andrea is fairly cheap. Don’t expect fancy and don’t eat the salad.
